Jewad Selim was a pioneering and influential artist from Iraq (1919 Ankara – 1961 Baghdad). He is a founding member of the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1949, the Baghdad Modern Art Group with Shakir Hassan Al Said in 1956 and the Society of Iraqi Plastic Arts. The title of this work, Baghdadiat, plural for Baghdad is a romanticised reference to the city where he lived and worked. It exemplifies a scene of everyday life capturing strong community interaction. Informal traditional culture and folk life is a recurring theme amongst Arab artists.
