This work is by Bahraini artist, Abdullah al-Muharraqi (born 1939, Manama). It signifies a turning point of discovery in the modern history of the Gulf region. Bahrain was the first amongst the Gulf countries to find petroleum in 1932 and later in other states and kingdoms leading to a radical transformation of their economy. A group of four male labourers are shown in this painting, working extremely hard together around an oil well. This painting by al-Muharraqi is distinguished by its rare depiction of local labourers, honouring and documenting their efforts as the first generation to work in the oil industry.
